Perfect Pokemon Game For Mobile Gamers: Pokemon Quest

Updated: Mar 18, 2020

Pokemon Quest for iPhone and Android is an RPG game filled with cute cube shaped Pokemon. At first glimpse, the game seems undemanding and straightforward, with a limited range of only 141 Pokemon. However, there is much more to it than meets the eye. This is a perfect game for Pokemon lovers who unfortunately do not own a video game console.

See I have never been impressed by the Pokemon games that are available on the AppStore as the majority of them are puzzle based games which have no correlation to real Pokemon adventures. But Pokemon Quest is distinct, allowing you to evolve Pokemon and cook various recipes in order to attract new Pokemon to your base camp.

Despite my appreciation of the game, I must start on a negative by saying that the actual battles are the downside of the game. There is a lack of control for the gamer, as Pokemon automatically approach enemies, and all that is left for you to do is click on the attack of your choice. However, even then you are not in control of your Pokemon's positioning and therefore cannot directly aim at your opponent. Luckily, you can always turn on Auto mode, which allows you to put your phone down and make some snacks while your Pokemon battle it out. As long as your team has a near enough or higher amount of points than your enemy you are set to win.

The process of catching Pokemon in the game allows you to form an endearing connection with your Pokemon. You must carefully construct recipes to cook and then fight a set amount of battles to complete the cooking process. This amount of effort and time in order to catch a new Pokemon not only creates excitement but also causes you to become attached to the Pokemon you attract. The best part is that the ingredients used for cooking you collect by winning battles, meaning that the game works in a consistent loop.

Everyone loves a free-to-start game and Pokemon Quest is exactly that. In addition, you receive 50 free PM tickets every 22 hours and considering that the game doesn't have a ton of add ons available for purchase, that's all you really need. For example, if you run out of battery, it only costs 25 PM tickets to fully recharge, and if you are short for space in your storage boxes an expansion will cost you 50 PM tickets but last a long time, or you have the option of recycling what is there. The game simply doesn't require you to spend a lot, if anything at all.

Another way in which the game allows you to interact with your Pokemon is by customising the power stones which your Pokemon uses. These power stones enable you to alter Pokemon moves, as well as, increase or decrease both the attack and HP of your Pokemon. Power stones are rewarded for completing quests and collected during combat.

After playing the game for a substantial amount of time now it has become apparent that the strategy to winning the battles is forming a team of Pokemon of the appropriate type and with suitable HP and attack levels in order to succeed. Each battle is different from the other. It is a process of trial and error, which can often get extremely frustrating if you don't have the correct water Pokemon to pass onto the next level.

Taking into account that Pokemon Quest was initially introduced as a game on Nintendo Switch, I think it is safe to say that it is much more appropriate as a mobile phone game. There is not enough substance in the game for it to be played on a game console, but it is a perfect game to play when commuting on the train or during your lunch break.
